Activity Synopsis

 
Objective(s):

The seminar aimed to:

- improve lawyers’ knowledge on the European standards on media and judiciary;
- show the ways of maintenance of fair balance of the rights of media and judiciary;
- improve lawyers’ knowledge about guaranteeing fair treatment of media suits in Ukrainian judges;
- describe the right of the mass-media to access to courts in Ukraine and abroad;
- improve lawyers’ knowledge on principle of presumption of innocence;
- improve lawyers' professional skills in legal defense of independent media,
- enhance communication between media lawyers in Ukraine.
 

Output/Results:

The participants of the seminar showed an interest in the seminar and debated practically every issue especially on the implementation of the European standards in practice in the European countries and possibilities for the implementation of these standards in Ukraine. The participants analysed the main problems in Ukraine: journalists' access to courts; publication of court reporting; limits of amissible criticism of judges and law officers and others.

Information about the seminar was published in:
''Yurydychna praktyka'' # 1-2 (471-472), 2 January, 2007

The seminar reached the audience it was designed for. It helped to gather the best specialists in media law in Ukraine at the same time involving new people to this sphere.

The participants of the seminar pointed out that the seminar corresponds to their professional needs and made some remarks about seminar. Also they pointed out that it was very useful to listen about European practice directly from European experts and famous and experienced advocates.

In particular they suggested that the representatives of the Ukrainian judicial system and Ukrainian judges should be invited to the seminar.
 

Conclusions/Follow Up:

The seminar was very useful for its participants. It helped them to increase their knowledge and communication between Ukrainian lawyers and also with lawyers of European court.

Participants proposed such topics as: Freedom of Expression and Privacy Rights for future seminars.

There were some publications about the seminar in the web.
