Activity Synopsis

Objective(s):

To prepare the 3rd meeting of the CDMC to be held from 30 May to 2 June 2006.

To examine the repercussions on the work of the CDMC of Resolution (2005) 47 on committees and subordinate bodies, their terms of reference and working and of the new Terms of reference of the Steering Committee on the Media and New Communication Services (CDMC).

To discuss with the Secretaries of the Groups of Specialists working methods and execution of terms of reference

Output/Results:

The Bureau decided on the items to be included in the draft agenda for the Steering Committee meeeting and provided comments allowing the Secretariat to prepared detailed annotations to the agenda with a view to fcilitating the work of the Steering Committee and the taking of decisions.

The Bureau considered the impact of CM decisions (ToR and Resolution (2005)47) on the work of the CDMC, particularly with regard to two concrete issues which it is called upon to address in its revised terms of reference, monitoring and the development of co-operation and exchanges with other countries and organisations.

The Bureau made drafting suggestions to the draft instruments submitted by the Groups of Specialists for consideration by the CDMC, examined progress made with regard to work to be considerd by the CDMC, in particular with regard to defamation, copyright and internet governance.

The Bureau held an exchange with the Secretaries of the CDMC subordinate groups of specialists with a view to increasing its knowledge of the functioning and working methods of the groups, the difficulties that they may encounter. It
also decided that the Chairpersons of the groups of specialists be invited to hold an exchange with the Bureau during its next meeting (to be held on 29 May 2006) and with the CDMC (on 30 May 2006). This would permit to discuss, on the one hand, working methods and, on the other hand, the expected results and progress being made by each of the groups.

The Bureau expressed itself in favour of the request for the by the non-governmental organisation Article 19 and decided to invite a representative to present the request to the next meeting of the CDMC.
