Activity Synopsis |
|
Objective(s): |
The issue of media concentration is becoming increasingly present in contemporary societies given the fact that it may negatively influence pluralism in the media. The main objective of the conference was to further address these important issues and to identify possible ways of regulating media concentration so as to protect media pluralism. The conference aimed at an exchange of experience concerning these issues and increasing the level of knowledge on them. The specific topics included:
• legal standards concerning media pluralism and media concentration and the need for such standards – rules under national and international law;
• practice and impact of anti-concentration measures in relation to media pluralism and concentration;
• obstacles and prospects for the development of broadcast media depending on the rules on media pluralism and concentration;
• what measures should be pursued in order to guarantee media pluralism.
|
Output/Results: |
The main debate was centred around the issue of media concentration and types of regulation of media concentration in the light of protection of pluralism in media. Participants exchanged experience and tried to find the similarities and the differences in defining media concentration in relevant countries. As to Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was noted that there are still no examples of media concentration.
A press release was issued after all participants agreed with the draft conclusions on 9 November 2004. Four TV stations and several radio stations covered the event.
