Activity Synopsis

Objective(s):

The aim of this workshop was twofold: Firstly to evaluate participants' progress since the last training and to analyse their programmes. Secondly, to give tools to improve news stories through detailed observation and sharper angles.

Output/Results:

As in the first EBU workshop at TRM in February 2003, the Radio and TV journalist participants this time responded to the presentation once again with enthusiasm and excitement. Nearly all participants came back for this second workshop.

They seemed sincerely interested in the new concepts presented and remembered to an astonishing degree what was presented in February. Many personally expressed to the trainer their gratitude to EBU.

One problem encountered during the training was that several people missed a morning or afternoon session, explaining they were required at work. This problem was explained to the representative from TRM's international relations department and it was noted. The majority of participants however, were present throughout the training.

The participating journalists performed the modules and demonstrated that they understood the concepts being presented.

A in the previous workshop in February 2003, the TRM administrative staff organised the seminar in an extremely professional, friendly, open, and helpful manner. The materials were prepared accurately, and the translation was good.

The results of the workshop, as shown in the evaluation forms, were excellent and better than in February. It was considered useful, enjoyable and met completely the participants’ expectations. The participants liked the second workshop since it was more targeted to news production.

Conclusions/Follow Up:

Thanks to an excellent partnership with the Council of Europe, TRM and the EBU, the impact of the second workshop was again very strong. Originally the workshop was planned for end of May 2003, but due to the elections in the country, Mr Jorgen Grunnet, Special Representative of the Secretary General in Moldova asked us to postpone the workshop for better results and this proved useful.

While we have seen some improvement from what we saw in February, there are still few examples of balanced coverage, the use of good pictures and ''real people.''

However, the hierarchy from TRM reacted extremely well to the workshop. Mr Gonta, Director General of TRM said “they provide professional methods that are not handicapped by ideology''.

We should continue this effort and build on the confidence and trust that we have been able to achieve.
