Activity Synopsis

The main objective was to define together the objectives, structures and programme of activities of the “New Generation” (NG) project newly launched by AIM. Since 1995 the network has provided training to over 400 young journalists from six countries. These trainees often express the wish to continue working together on some joint activity which can contribute to their further training. The NG project will bring together young journalists from throughout S.E. Europe who will establish and run a special section on the AIM website for the articles that they write on topics that they decide together to cover. Their publication on the site will help the authors to start off on their professional career. 

Svetozar Sarkanjac, director of AIM's cross-border training programmes, will coordinate this project. Editorial meetings will be held about every two months, bringing together the young journalists responsi-ble for this project in the different countries and regions. Twice a year larger meetings will provide an occasion for around 50 of the participants to meet and discuss the project. This will give them a chance to learn how to run a media, decide on topics and apply professional criteria etc. It will also help establish regular cross-border links and cooperation between young journalists. 

The trainees were very motivated and enthusiastic about the planned project. It was possible to define the programme of activities for the coming months and appoint those responsible in each country. Many of the trainees made useful suggestions concerning subjects to be covered in articles and the way in which the activities should be organised. The participants left the seminar with considerable optimism with regard to the future of the New Generation project. The immediate task facing Svetozar Sarkanjac, director of the NG project, and of the trainees will be to form the editorial teams in each country, start to write articles with a constant mutual flow of critical reaction, and to establish the Internet web-site.
