Activity Synopsis

Objective(s):

To improve the commercial viability of small broadcasters that increase the range and diversity of views heard on air. To target state & private stations.

Output/Results:

This workshop was the last in a series of four which were believed to be the first international training courses aimed at the FM commercial radio sector in Belarus and delivered within the country since independence.

In drawing up the original proposal, discussions were held with the head of the office of IREX ProMedia, members of the target audience and the BBC’s regional experts. Published sources were reviewed in order to assess the current media situation in Belarus.

A trainer with relevant expertise was identified and allocated time in the UK to draw up course outlines based on the identified needs of the participants. Course materials and text, audio and video examples were and, where necessary, translated into Russian.

The country office IrexPro Media in Minsk provided the training venue and equipment, and recruited participants.

The trainer has provided a full written report on the activity. The report includes a detailed breakdown of all course activity. Changes to the course schedule were made to meet the requirements of the participants. They are fully reflected in the course report.

No media coverage was known to have been produced as a direct result of this course.

All participants completed an evaluation form at the end of the course. The full results are included in the trainer’s report. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive in terms of whether the course met their expectations and the level of training and relevance to their work. Feedback was positive too on whether the course would enable them to do their jobs better in a tangible and practical way. No negative feedback was recorded.

Twelve participants from almost all the possible stations (state-controlled as well as commercially owned) were reached.

Conclusions/Follow Up:

No declarations or decisions were made as a result of this training.

A clear need and wish for further training for FM commercial radio stations was identified. BBC world Service Training – World Service and IREX ProMedia will explore ways or providing this.

A large amount of news management training material in Russian was provided. This is probably the first time such material has been made available in Belarus.
