Activity Synopsis

Objective(s):

In order to promote the long-term development of journalists’ skills, this activity aimed at training a team of local trainers that would be able in the future to provide training to other media professionals from Kaliningrad.

Output/Results:

The training was met with great interest by the participants, who participated actively in the seminar. Unfortunately the dates of the seminar coincided with other important local events (local elections, anniversary of local TV station) and the attendance was considerably lower than anticipated.

One outcome of the training was to make participants aware of differences between the obligations and goals of journalists on the one hand and that of public relation officers on the other.

In working group sessions the participants learnt about journalistic practices and techniques.

The trainer was able to adapt to the needs of the participants in an excellent manner. In addition to sessions on pedagogical skills he trained the participants in basic journalistic techniques, talked to them about the different kinds of journalism and taught them how to put together topics for a journalism training.

Conclusions/Follow Up:

The participants were very satisfied with the training and felt to have profited largely from it. The exercise in video journalism was particularly appreciated. Overall, the participants felt that the practical approach of the seminar was of great help for their work as journalists and their possible future activities as trainers.

At the end of the training all participants said that they had started to follow international news (they had been invited to do so by the trainer who had organised an ‘editorial meeting’ at the start of each training day) and they would continue to do so.

At least half of the participants said that they would start working as trainers after the seminar.
