Activity Synopsis

 
Objective(s):

The aims of the seminar were:
- awareness raising for journalists about the ECHR and a case law of the European Court on freedom of expression and information;
- assistance for dialogue between courts and journalists in Zaporizhia region
- to discuss an accession of journalists to the court;
- to discuss the principle of the presumption of innocence;
- to discuss the protection of judges’ reputation.
 

Output/Results:

- Participants were familiarised with the standards of the ECHR and case law of the ECHR on freedom of expression and information. They acquired practical skills for applying these standards in their daily work.
- Participants in the seminar have received the methodical materials: Ukrainian law, Recommendations of the Committee of Ministries of Council of Europe, case law of European Court on freedom of expression and information and examples of the practical accession of journalists to the court;
- Participants in the seminar have discussed the questions of protection of judges’ reputation and principle
of the presumption of innocence. Participants have taken part in a case study prepared by Ukrainian expert.
 

Conclusions/Follow Up:

Participants in the seminar have supported the idea of the introduction of press secretaries in the courts, informing journalists on judicial proceedings, providing for the accession of journalists to the court. The follow-up activities must be directed towards the organisation of training for regional journalists, carrying out of joint meetings for judges and journalists.
