Activity Synopsis

 
Objective(s):

The aim of the training was to enhance the capacity of Equal Access Committee/Spilnyi Prostir Association to conduct a credible and sustainable media monitoring project prior to the 2007 parliamentary elections. 

Output/Results:

- Standard rights, freedoms and responsibilities regarding media during an election – international standards and best practices (Recommendation No. R (99) 15 of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on measures concerning media coverage of election campaigns)
- Practical aspects of media monitoring
- Quantitative and qualitative method of analysis
- Media effects and manipulative technologies
- Monitoring of broadcast and print media
- Data collection and entering
- Interpretation of the data
- Presenting the results to the public
- Holding aPress conference
 

Conclusions/Follow Up:

In the course of the training, participants showed their interest in the different aspects of media monitoring and asked a number of questions, making the training interactive. At the end of each session, Alexander Chekmyshev of the Equal Access Committee introduced concrete aspects of the planned media monitoring exercise. The training being short and intensive, the trainers considered that the participants received all the necessary information concerning an election-related media monitoring project (including a number of concrete examples from various countries).
