Title: Seminar ''Being a young refugee in Europe today''
Description: In Europe today, some young people were or are obliged to leave their homes, to abandon all the things which made their universe, to leave some parts of themselves behind. “Refugees”, “internally displaced people”, “asylum seekers” can also be young people. In the framework of the Campaign “ all different/all equal” , within the work priority on Human Rights and Intercultural dialogue, the Directorate of Youth and Sports of the Council of Europe organises during the second semester 2006 a seminar on “being a young refugee in Europe today”, willing to stress that the European Youth Centers are also spaces for young refugees; that we cannot promote youth participation, youth policy, Human Rights and intercultural dialogue without listening, without hearing all young people, and therefore also young people who are refugees. This activity also aims at developing networks and at formulating recommendations to be transmitted to European institutions.
At national level, the discussion about the situation of young refugees is starting to be on the top of the agenda; in Western Europe mostly under the question of “the Asylum issue”. Some National Youth Councils, like the Flamish or the Dutch, have started working on this question. This seminar will be organised in strong collaboration with the UNHCR.
