Activity Synopsis |
Objective(s): | The aim of the seminar was to provide for practical and direct discussion on safety issues and ethical issues when reporting in a hostile environment and to raise participants’ awareness of these issues.
Output/Results: | The overall evaluation of the seminar by the course leaders and participants was very positive. Slight amendments to the original programme were taken after discussion with participants to ensure that the seminar meets their expectations. Especially the sessions focusing on the practical safety considerations and post-traumatic stress as well as the working group sessions were valued as very positive. Also, the practical organisation went very smoothly.
Conclusions/Follow Up: | The seminar concluded that access to insurance as provided by several media freedom and professional organisations was essential for journalists from the region. Given their first-hand experience of conflict and the fact that most had some kind of safety training, dealing with post-traumatic stress and related symptoms is a priority for journalists in the region. Secondly, the seminar clearly showed that there is more need for debate and practical exercises and discussion to confront the problems of negative coverage and self-censorship. |
