Activity Synopsis

For the CoE to “take an active part in the follow-up and implementation phase of the WSIS process, making the Organisation a fully-fledged partner in the discussions undertaken concerning Internet governance, thereby bringing a strong human rights dimension to the Internet Governance Forum”. 

The Council of Europe played an active role both in underlining the importance of the Council of Europe’s core values and their application to the Internet in the IGF in particular by:

- actively participating in preparatory meetings of the UN Internet Governance Advisory Group;

- preparing a written submission on Internet Governance issues with regard to the rights and freedoms of the Council of Europe;

- organising a Council of Europe workshop on “Human rights and the Internet: how anonymous can and should we be?” during the IGF;

- in securing the participation of Council of Europe experts on the panels of the main IGF (plenary) session events on “openness” and “security” of the Internet;

- in securing the participation of Council of Europe experts in seven other IGF workshop events related to the “openness” and “security” themes.
 

Follow-up is necessary and is currently being planned at an inter-service level within the Secretariat of the Council of Europe.
